The vehicle, a 26t rigid Renault Premium Distribution Hybrys, will operate from Norbert Dentressangle’s depot in Aylesford, Kent. It will be making deliveries into London, often at night and in the early morning, where the benefits of the diesel-electric hybrid technology in terms of low noise, reduced emissions and improved fuel consumption will really come into its own. Renault Trucks believes this is the first UK registered 26t hybrid to go into service in the UK on a ‘distribution’ operation.
Renault Trucks’ hybrid technology is particularly suited to this type of distribution operation in urban environments. In addition to an appreciable saving in fuel consumption, which can be as high as 20% with optimum use, it also significantly cuts noise levels for those living in the vicinity, to no more than 74 dB, again when in all-electric mode. This being the equivalent of two people talking in low voices.
The new Renault Premium Hybrys Tech going into service with Norbert Dentressangle UK is a 26t 6x2 310hp vehicle with a 8.4m box body with tail lift.
It will be supported in service by two specially accredited ‘Clean Tech’ dealers in Renault Trucks’ UK network. MV Trucks at Maidstone and Renault Trucks Essex in Grays. Staff at both dealerships have been fully trained to service and maintain the vehicle and have invested in special bays, tooling and equipment to meet Renault Trucks’ Clean Tech standards for alternative energy vehicles.
RENAULT PREMIUM DISTRIBUTION HYBRYS: HOW IT WORKS
Renault Trucks has been perfecting its hybrid technology over the last few years & continues to develop its solutions to meet the growing needs of operators for quieter, more fuel efficient & less polluting vehicles.
The Renault Premium Distribution Hybrys is already in operation in a number of companies, including SITA and the Greater Lyon Authority for refuse collection and building site supply, plus Colas and Coca-Cola for distribution operations. Norbert Dentressangle has also been operating two Renault Trucks’ hybrids in Lyon & Paris for the last ten months. Demonstrating the wide breadth of operations this technology is suitable for.
Parallel hybrid technology
This type of diesel-electric hybrid is known as ‘parallel’ hybrid technology, combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. They supply power to the wheels according to different distribution scenarios: either with both in parallel, or separately.
The principle of this technology developed by Renault Trucks is very straightforward: the vehicle's kinetic energy is recovered during braking or deceleration phases and converted into electricity. This is stored in the traction batteries which therefore operate perfectly independently and do not need to be recharged.
An engine shut down function enables the internal combustion engine to be automatically switched off when the vehicle is at a standstill. When the vehicle is started up again, the energy stored in the batteries is used to power the electric motor. At a speed of up to 20 km/hour, the diesel engine starts up and takes over. It is then only used in the phases during which it consumes the least, i.e. apart from the start-up phase.
The electrical energy is also used to power the safety and comfort functions which are usually connected to the internal combustion engine, such as the power steering or the cooling system for the electrical equipment.
All of this results in the vehicle's overall consumption and CO2 emissions being reduced by up to 20%.
Apart from reducing emissions, hybrid technology generates very little noise pollution - no more than 74 dB when operating in all-electric mode.
Under these conditions, hybrid technology proves to be perfectly adapted to early morning or even night-time urban applications, which are constantly alternating between phases of acceleration and deceleration.
Renault Trucks Clean Tech vehicles
To meet the environmental challenge road transport now has to face and its customers' growing demand for vehicles that pollute less, particularly in built-up areas, Renault Trucks has been developing alternative technologies to diesel for several years. These include electricity*, hybrid solutions and also compressed natural gas* (CNG). Vehicles using these three types of energy are covered by the Clean Tech label and are mainly designed for applications in urban environments. (*Not currently available in the UK.)
Concerned by the need to provide a quality of maintenance identical to that offered for vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, Renault Trucks has developed a specific accreditation, ‘Clean Tech’ which is awarded to qualifying repairers in its network. This is because with these new technologies it is necessary to develop specific skills and install the appropriate tools required for servicing this type of vehicle.
In the UK dealer network, MV Trucks at Maidstone and Renault Trucks Essex at Grays have made investments in the region of £10,000 in the necessary tooling and equipment to enable them to meet the Clean Tech standard, which includes a designated bay to handle this vehicle, due to the additional electrical requirements.
Additionally, both dealerships have invested in the training of their workshop and customer service staff to ensure that the Norbert Dentressangle hybrid is properly supported in operation.

Lowestoft-based waste, scrap and recycling company, CR Hales Ltd, has taken delivery of the UK’s first Renault Kerax 520.42 8x4 drawbar skip loader. This unique vehicle, supplied by Renault Trucks main dealer Renault Trucks Felixstowe, in conjunction with the Roy Humphrey Group, was purposed designed for CR Hales’ application and Renault Trucks was the only manufacturer able to deliver to this exacting specification.
The Kerax, with Boughton body fitted by Machinery Maintenance Limited in Stanton, went on the road on 1st March and joins CR Hales’ mixed fleet of Daf, Scania and Iveco skip loaders and roll-on/roll-offs. The high-powered 520 bhp engine ensures that the Kerax and its trailer operate at 44 tonne gross weight effectively, and for Managing Director Charles Richard (Dick) Hales, the extra torque delivered by the Renault truck was the key factor in the company’s purchasing decision.
Charles Hales says: “We researched the market and found that only Renault Trucks had the manufacturing flexibility that allowed us to stipulate exactly what we wanted – everyone else could only offer off-the-shelf trucks. We needed extra horse power to pull up hills when we’re running at 44 tonnes and the Kerax’s 520 engine delivers. Getting the right specification was paramount and although fuel efficiency wasn’t our first consideration the fuel consumption of the Kerax’s larger engine is comparable to the rest of the fleet.”
Family business, CR Hales Ltd was established in 1980 by Charles Richard Hales and has grown to become one of Suffolk’s leading scrap and waste recycling companies with a reputation for service excellence. Today, the family are still actively involved in the company which employs 10 staff, runs a fleet of five trucks and specialises in services including commercial and domestic waste transfer, recycling centre, end of life vehicle disposal and skip hire.

Leading cement supplier, Hanson Cement, has taken delivery of six Renault Premium 460.25 6x2 tractor units with Privilege cabs. In an important conquest deal for Renault Trucks UK, these are the first Renault Premiums to join Hanson Cement’s 200-strong fleet of Mercedes Benz and Volvo tractor units, with the Premium’s proven fuel economy a key factor in the purchase decision.
Prepared to Hanson Cement’s exacting specification, the new Premiums operate out of Ribblesdale in Clitheroe and Ketton in Rutland, pulling Felbinder 40 cubic metre powder tank trailers for bulk cements and low height curtain siders to transport packaged products nationwide.
Commenting on the decision to add six Renault Premiums to the fleet, Andrew Bridge, Distribution Director of Hanson Cement, says: “With an annual fuel spend of £8million, fuel economy is our principle driver. The Renault Premium performed well in trials and its driveline definitely makes a difference to fuel economy. January was their first month on the road and the Premiums operating out of Clitheroe are already delivering 7.97 mpg, which for new vehicles at this time of year is good on our service.”
As well as driving down costs, improved fuel efficiency helps reduce the environmental impact of Hanson Cement’s transport operation, an integral part of the company’s business strategy. Andrew Bridge continues: “We run fully freighted for 60 percent of the time and usually at the maximum 44 tonne gvw, so driving down fuel consumption is key to improving our operational efficiency and meeting our environmental commitments.”
Hanson Cement is a division of Hanson UK, a major supplier of construction materials, principally aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete, bricks and cement. Hanson is part of the Heidelberg Cement Group, which employs 53,000 people across five continents and has leading positions in cement, concrete and heavy building products.
