The climate crisis and widespread implementation of Low Emission Zones (LEZ) are posing new challenges that require significant changes to the road haulage sector. Of the alternative energy types available today, electricity is the most effective means of decarbonising your operations in urban applications.

What is the driving range of an electric truck?

The driving range of an electric truck varies according to several factors, including: the application of the truck, the load being transported, the driving style and the external conditions. The driving range of a Renault Trucks E-Tech vehicle may reach up to 560km*, depending on the type of the electric heavy commercial vehicle being used, and the conditions of use.

Speed and the electric truck

Your driving speed has a significant impact on driving range. The faster you drive, the more energy you consume.

Topography also impacts the driving range of an electric truck

Depending on the driving conditions, whether uphill, on the flat, or downhill, your truck will either consume or recover electricity.

Electromobility and the use of on-board equipment

Use of the heating and air conditioning systems while driving has an impact on the truck's energy consumption. The traction battery must also be brought up to operating temperature in cold weather conditions. The use of this equipment has an impact on energy consumption and therefore driving range.

The loads being transported have an impact on driving range

Your operation and the load being transported will influence the vehicle’s driving range. The greater the load being carried, the more energy required.

Driving style: what impact does this have on the driving range of an electric truck?

Your driving style has a significant impact on the truck's energy consumption. Drive smoothly, use regenerative breaking and follow the rules for eco driving.

How does an electric truck work?

An electric truck uses an electric motor which consumes electrical energy. Batteries store the electrical energy necessary for the truck to operate; this dictates its driving range.

A battery is made up of a set of cells connected in modules, which are packaged inside the batteries. They are monitored by the battery management system (BMS). This is an electronic component that safeguards the electric truck and battery against premature ageing and fire if used inappropriately. The energy density is increased thanks to the use of Lithium-ion NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cells, which have an excellent power : weight ratio and thus offer the best compromise between operating range and payload.

Renault Trucks commitments

We rely on a sustainable supply chain and conduct supply chain audits with our suppliers, including the cobalt mines themselves. The batteries are assembled in Europe, and the vehicles are assembled in France.

Recycling is the responsibility of Renault Trucks once the batteries are returned to the dealer. Batteries have multiple opportunities for their second life, including in electricity storage equipment in off-grid houses and buildings, or solar plants. Recycling is also essential for guaranteeing a sustainable electromobility solution. Renault Trucks and the Volvo Group are fully involved in this area, which is continuously developing as the market is growing.

How is an electric truck recharged?

Renault Trucks E-tech range

An electric truck is recharged slowly using an adapted socket with alternating current (AC) or rapidly using a direct current (DC) charger for. Renault Trucks can help you find a sustainable charging solution, suited to your operation and your requirements. Renault Trucks charging solutions can be adapted to provide greater flexibility. We can also provide you with support in deciding upon the charging mode best suited to maintaining your profitability and advise you on how to recharge your electric trucks.

How much does an electric truck cost?

Today, capital cost of purchasing an electric truck is more than an equivalent ICE truck. However, it’s important to think of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for an electric truck. When in use, the cost of an electric truck rapidly approaches that of its diesel counterpart, and can even be more cost effective as the cost of energy is less than fossil fuel.
