Sparrow Recovery, one of the UK's leading vehicle recovery specialists, has taken delivery of a custom-built 120-tonne capacity Renault Trucks recovery vehicle—marking its second vehicle of this nature.

The Renault Trucks C P8X4 13-litre Euro 6 chassis, delivering 520hp and 2,550Nm of torque, has been built to an extremely detailed and high-capacity specification, developed in close partnership with local Renault Trucks dealer Thompson Commercials at Hull.

"These are the biggest Renault Trucks recovery vehicles in the country with our exact specification," explained James Sparrow, co-owner of Sparrow Recovery. "We're quite pedantic with our orders because we know exactly what we want. One of the best things about ordering from Renault Trucks is the flexibility—you can move components around the chassis to suit your needs. It means we get a truly custom-built truck, and it saves the body builders a lot of time because everything’s already where it needs to be.”

The new truck features a range of factory-fitted upgrades, including axle load indicators, rear air suspension with eight bellows, a maxi space rear cab locker, and Bridgestone 13R 22.5 tyres. With two 16.5-tonne rear axles, this configuration offers exceptional load capacity—making it capable of recovering everything from sprinter vans to fully loaded articulated lorries and even 100-tonne cranes.

Sparrow Recovery runs a diverse 45-vehicle fleet, from compact lift-and-shift units to heavy-duty rotator cranes operates across its three depots in North Cave (East Yorkshire), Leeds (West Yorkshire) and Gamston (Nottinghamshire). Specialising in the recovery of trucks, vans buses and coaches, the 24-year-old family-run business covers much of the UK with a core focus on Yorkshire, Humberside, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, as well as undertaking recovery missions for customers into Europe, including Austria, Italy and Scandinavia.

“When our trucks go out in the morning, we never know what they’ll face or where they’ll travel to – it could be a double-decker bus broken down in Scarborough, a loaded eight-wheeler in Leeds or a 26-tonne artic in Spain that needs recovering,” said James. “That’s why we’ve had this truck specified and kitted out for every possible circumstance.”

For Sparrow, safety is paramount—especially when deploying new drivers. “You can put a new driver in these big Renaults and they’re safe,” he explained. “They’ve got massive brakes, huge transmissions, brilliant retarders. They steer straight, they stop properly. Everything is oversized and that makes them safe and reliable.”

The new vehicle is part of a vehicle replacement plan and joins a modernised frontline fleet where Sparrow aims to keep all main units under five years old. The truck is double-manned and fully equipped for extended international recovery missions, featuring a luxury sleeper cab, upgraded fridge, air conditioning, sat nav, on-board weighing systems, and full DVS (Direct Vision Standard) compliance for London operations.

The Renault Trucks C P8x4 has been fitted with a high-performance recovery body from Dutch manufacturer Falkom, a supplier Sparrow regards as the best in the business. “We don’t even inspect the Falkom body before delivery — their quality control is off the scale. It’s probably the most expensive body on the market, but you absolutely get what you pay for.”

A focus on operability and efficiency has also informed the Renault Trucks highly customised layout. Every option has been ticked—from custom alloy drawer kits and air dryers relocated for faster body fitting, to optimised airline routing and PTO compatibility—making this one of the most complete recovery vehicles operating today.

Despite its size and power, fuel efficiency remains a standout. “It returns 11 to 12 mpg on some runs,” Sparrow said. “For a double-drive reduction axle setup, that’s phenomenal. I honestly don’t know why anyone in the recovery sector would even consider anything other than a Renault Truck —this Renault chassis does everything we could possibly ask of it and is perfect for our line of work.”

Sparrow Recovery also runs its own workshop and in-house training school, where both James Sparrow and his son Luke are qualified recovery trainers. “We’re not a typical recovery firm—we train other recovery operators as we pride ourselves on doing things properly and want to share our knowledge.,” explained James. “From MOTs to equipment training, everything is to a high standard, and our fleet reflects that. We’re known for running well-maintained, high-quality kit which is why we opted for the new Renault C P8x4.”

Key to enabling this exacting approach is the close relationship with Renault Trucks dealer Thompson Commercials in Hull. “They’re fantastic,” Sparrow said. “Ellis, James and the team—they run it like a family business, just like we do. They know the product inside out and they’re brilliant to deal with.”

Alistair Mann, Area Sales Executive at Thompson Commercials, commented: “Working with customers like Sparrow Recovery, who know their craft and push for the best specification, is what this job’s all about. These 120-tonne Renault Trucks are incredible machines and seeing them in Sparrow’s hands shows what’s possible when product quality meets real-world operational insight.”
